  1. Oooh! I believe this is a Red Knot! The reason I can identify it is not because of the size or shape or coloration or bill-length, but because it has a green leg-band with JX3 on it! Having read up about these things I can say that most of the birds with a light green above knee flag are Red Knots and they really want to have these banded bird sightings reported! If you like, I can do it for you (it’s a bit of a pain). Are you certain of the date and location? Once reported, the reporter can get a detailed print-out of everywhere the bird has been (if seen). I got one for my TV6 & 89X birds!
If you have pictures of any other banded birds (or any shots to show how many birds it was with or its legs from other angles to show [or disprove] other bands) that’d be great.

    • Absolutely sure of the date and location. Unfortunately, that was the only banded bird there that day. I had taken a lot of photos, and used those to help me fill out the information regarding the birds that were with the Red Knots, other Red Knots and other species as well as their numbers. I discovered there were 12 species in total and determined their numbers.. It is a very small beach, so that was incredible.

  2. Looking more closely, I believe I see a light blue band on the left leg above the knee (as well as the metal band on the right leg below the knee). My “TV6” bird had these exact rings, flags and colours. It’s likely then that they came from the same location (which if I remember rightly was New Jersey).

  3. That’s really fascinating! Do you know anything about who’s doing the study, or what they’re looking for/finding out?

  4. Yes I do. Let me go digging through my inbox….

  5. It’s called “bandedbird.org” and here is the list they sent me (if it fits on this page)… [Oct 12th 2012 was me].

  6. I was so excited to find this Red Knot. DaLo, thanks for the offer to report this bird to bandedbirds.org. I have already reported “him” (as I think of the bird in the generic sense), and I will post his journey here, then compare it to the birds you sighted. I am glad you posted your resightings and the resighting records, so we can see if there are similarities. Interesting that we both sighting our birds in Pinellas County. I knew the Red Knot would be identified quickly, but the point was the story of these birds, and how exciting it was to find him. The last time I sighted a banded bird, he was too far away to discern the necessary information. Gotta go. Will return with his journeys.

  8. DaLo, these are the comparisons I discovered between the birds you sighted and the one I did. Though you did not specifically say, the birds you sighted were also Red Knots? The bird you sighted FL(89X) and the bird I sighted, FL(JX3) did not share the initial capture location nor any of the sighting locations. I suspect 89X liked New Jersey until hearing there would be a storm in the future, then headed for Georgia before coming to Florida.

The next comparison reveals more commonalities. TV6 and JX6 were both captured in Florida. I don’t know why TV6 would need to be captured twice as yours was. Both TV6 and JX6 were sighted at Wolf Island Wildlife Refuge in Georgia in Aug and Sept of 2011. They were sighted one day apart in Aug. Maybe in the same flock? While TV6 has traveled between Georgia and Florida, JX6 did a little exploring in Delaware

Then, both you and I sighted banded Red Knots in Pinellas County, Florida. This is what people call “Small World.”

  9. I find all of that fascinating!! 🙂 (yes, mine were also Red Knots)

  10. Wow! It is definitely fascinating to read the travel history for these birds and now both of you can keep track of where your birds will be seen next.

  11. I’ll be keeping my eyes open for DaLo’s two. Clearwater is not very far from here.
