This Lesser Scaup was taken in Stanley Park (Vancouver) in January 2012. Note the length of the bill (compared to the head) and the peak on the head (which appears rather greenish). Perhaps I should post more photos of this species on my blog?

Hello all, turning to a raptor, now, can anyone tell me what bird is on these two photos, which represent the same individual?
I believe this is either a Cooper’s or a Sharp-shinned Hawk (with a preference for Cooper’s, because of the rounded tail), but I would appreciate your input on this one, especially if you think it is something else entirely.
The photos were taken in the second half of December 2011, in a fairly large urban park in North Vancouver, BC, Canada.
Hell0 again! The following birds were taken a couple of days ago (August 2, 2012) at Lost Lake in Whistler, BC, Canada. My best guess is that these are juvenile Mergansers, either Hooded or Common. Any guesses as to which of the two? Perhaps you think I’m completely wrong? Your suggestions would be welcome!
Hello again folks!
Between road trips, I thought I would once again ask your advice about a couple of shore birds. Both were taken in late July (a couple of days ago, in fact) on Long Beach, Vancouver Island (on the Pacific side, between the towns of Tofino and Uculelet) in B.C., Canada.
In the case of the gull (on the first photo), there isn’t much doubt in my mind that this is a California Gull except for one point: the handsom bird in the photo is clearly a breeding adult, but this species usually only winters on the Island.
In the case of the second shore bird, I am about 98% certain that this is a Western Sandpiper, but I would like another pair of eyes to take a look at the picture (to confirm). It’s not great, but you should be able to zoom in to take a better look…
